A keen observer of Kaduna state politics will not be surprised by today’s dumping of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) by Chief of State to the Senate President, Bukola Saraki Hakeem Baba-Ahmad.
He is one of the founding members of Alkida faction of the party in Kaduna state.
Alkida group of APC in Kaduna state is at logger heads with the Governor, Nasir El-rufai also of the APC over the Governor’s style in running the state .
Trouble started in the party when the group started criticizing the state Governor for his plan demolition of some building in the state in order to allow infrastructural development. The group argued that demolition of buildings was not part of the campaign promises made by the party during the build up to the 2015 general election.
Another issue that snowballed into crisis in the state is the control of the party in the state. The state chapter of the party has no substantive Chairman because the last occupier became a National Deputy Chairman and the incumbent state Deputy Chairman belongs to the Alkida group.
The Governor appointed 16 to 18 members of the state working committee into his cabinet which they must they must leave their previous offices but they were still holding the two offices.
The group has been critic of the Governor action in the state including the leaked memo from the Governor to President Buhari on state of the nation in September 2016. Chairman of Alkida group in the state Tom Maiyasha described the letter ”total disrespect” ”discourteous” and ”shocking”.
The crisis got to head when the state party executive loyal to the Governor suspended Senator Shehu Sanni from the party. Executive loyal to Alkida group also suspected the Governor.
The crisis of suspension and counter suspension was boiling when the building which serves as the State Secretariat of Alkida group that belongs to Senator Suleiman Othman Hunkuyi, a prominent member of the group was demolished by the state government over allegation of non payment of rent due and violation of building law.
Sacking of over 20,000 teachers by the Governor for failing competent test also pitched both camps against each other, the group wants the Governor to reverse his decision but the Governor failed to recall those affected.
Media was awash with tirade between the group and the Governor, the group vocal voice is Senator Shehu Sani calling the Governor a dictator while the Governor boosted that those that fought against him in the past are dead citing late President Musu Yar’dua.
Statement released by Baba Ahmed reads that the ruling party is not fit to rule the country again but warned that he is not leaving to join another party but he will remain active in politics.
“After three years, however, I need to say that the APC has grossly under-performed and has forfeited any claim to my loyalty and continue membership.
“I do not believe in all conscience, that it should be trusted and encouraged to continue to govern our great country beyond 2019.
“I am not leaving to join another party. This is my decision and mine alone. It has nothing to do with the President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki.
“It’s a decision taken after due consultations with Akida Group, a group that has predated my appointment as Chief of Staff to the President of the Senate.
“I will remain active in politics, as this is the main avenue for salvaging our nation from rising insecurity, poverty and divisions.”
