Adegoke Ogunsola, Osun sate chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) Legal Adviser has alleged that incumbent Governor Rauf Aregbesola is behind the adoption of direct primary method for Thursday governorship primary election in the state for selfish interest to determine his successor.
Ogunsola with nine other members of the State Working Committee (SWC) on Monday announced the suspension of the Party state Chairman, Gboyega Famodun and the party State Secretary, Rasak Salesile from the party at a press conference in Osogbo before they were attacked by political thugs.
In a swift reaction, the Party state Director of Publicity and Strategy, Kunle Oyatomi in a statement issued on Monday declared the suspension as null and void because the aggrieved SWC members lack the constitutional power to suspend any erring member.
Ogunsola on a radio programme monitored in Osogbo on Tuesday said the Governor is behind the direct primary to ensure his candidate emerged winner.
”Well, you all know the person that is behind it. Of recent you would have heard that the Governor is interested in a certain aspirant to succeed him, they will want to do everything to ensure that he is the one that is picked”
He failed to mention any candidate the Governor is supporting but findings by Kaakaki News from party members showed that the Governor is rooting for the candidacy of his Chief of Staff, Gboyega Oyetola.
He denied allegation that they are being sponsored by Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Moshood Adeoti and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representative, Lasun Yusuf.
“Nobody is using us, nobody is tele guiding us. I am a lawyer, you believe that somebody will teleguide me as a leader of the party with eleven others we have to give direction to the party, the party is not about the state Chairman and Secretary, it is about various organs of the party including the party Chairmen in the local government, youths leaders, women leaders and SEC”.
He added that his group is against the direct primary because it violate the party constitution.
”Article 25 and 26, before you can change anything in respect of the regulations and guidelines of the party primary, recommendation must be made to the party NEC. What they did yesterday was not approved by NEC, the NEC does not sit they will make seven days notice to the public”.
He assured that his faction will participate in Thursday Primary election to show their political strength in the state.
”We will take part in the primary, this election is not about us but about the people of Osun state. We don’t want them to accuse us of running away from battle field, we are telling them that we have people on ground and we will demonstrate it any day the primary takes place, we will be part of it”.
Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara state is the Chairman of the APC governorship primary election committee.
